Service FAQs | West Point Lincoln in Houston TX

Cars need regular maintenance but to the average person, it’s not always clear when they need it or why. The following service FAQ will help answer some of the most commonly asked questions about car maintenance.

Why Is An Oil Change Important?

Oil is what keeps your engine running smoothly. It lubricates the pistons and engine so that the mechanical pieces move smoothly without a lot of friction. Too much friction leads to overheating and can cause damage to engine parts. Changing the oil helps your engine stay healthy and efficient.

How Often Should I Get My Oil Changed?

Most automakers recommend having an oil change every 5,000 miles. But if you don’t drive very often or have a small commute then it’s suggested that you change every 1,000 miles. When you get your vehicle going on the highway or running for a long time, the engine gets hot enough that it burns away any condensation. A series of short trips won’t do this, and condensation can cause oil to break down faster. Consult your owner’s manual for more information about when to change your oil.

How Often Should I Check Fluid Levels?

There are several other fluids to think of under the hood. Transmission fluid and power steering fluid should typically be changed every 3 years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coolant should also not be overlooked. Over time, its pH changes and makes it more damaging to gaskets and seals. Some newer vehicles recommend 10 years or 100,000 miles between changes, but a simple pH kit can tell you if it’s acceptable. Brake fluid also needs to be checked. This fluid stops your brakes from overheating by wicking away moisture. But it absorbs that moisture which slowly degrades the fluid. A good rule of thumb is to replace the fluid when you are replacing brake parts.

How Much Air Should I Put In My Tires?

Tires need to be checked regularly. One way to prevent accidents and improve fuel efficiency is just to keep them inflated at the right pressure. Your vehicle has a recommended psi for your tires, usually on a sticker inside the driver side door frame or in the manual. It’s usually somewhere between 20 and 30 psi.

How Do I Tell If My Tires Need To Be Repaired?

Inspect your tire tread occasionally, especially if going on a long trip. Large tread allows debris and water to move through the tire giving it the ability to grip the road, but smooth treads cause slipping. Use a penny to check if the tread depth is too low. Stick it in a groove head down, and if Lincoln’s hair shows, the tread is too low and is dangerous. New tires are needed.

Why Are Regular Tire Rotations Necessary?

Rotating your vehicle’s tires on a regular basis ensures that they wear evenly and last longer — thus saving you money. Tires should typically be rotated every six months or every 5,000-7,500 miles, but check your owner’s manual for the specifics on your vehicle.

Why Is My Check Engine Light On?

If your check engine light is shining steadily, this indicates there’s an issue with your car that needs to be fixed. Possibilities range from a faulty gas cap to a problem with your engine’s emissions. At West Point Lincoln, we can hook up your vehicle to a code reader to find the specific issue.

Why Is My Check Engine Light Flashing?

If your check engine light is flashing, this indicates a serious, urgent problem that could badly damage your vehicle if you keep driving. In this case, it’s best to pull over right away and contact the West Point Lincoln service department.

When Should My Brake Pads Be Replaced?

Brake pads are critical components to help your vehicle stop, but eventually they wear out and need to be replaced. If your brakes start squealing or screeching, or if they’re not responding as sharply as they should, these are warning signs that the pads are wearing thin. It’s also a good idea to have your brake pads inspected regularly here at West Point Lincoln so we can catch wear and tear early before it becomes dangerous.

Am I Responsible For Maintaining A Leased Vehicle?

In short: Yes, you are. Warranty-covered repairs and scheduled service are often included as part of a lease agreement, but you’re ultimately responsible for making sure they happen. You’re also responsible for understanding which repairs and services are covered and which ones are not. Finally, it’s your responsibility to maintain insurance coverage in case of damage.

If you’re ever unsure about when and how to perform maintenance on your car, make sure to check your owner’s manual. Better yet, schedule a service appointment at West Point Lincoln in Houston, Texas.
